Abstract

The trend of empirical interaction barriers and related parameters is explored for various heavy ion reaction systems for $100<{Z}_{1}{Z}_{2}<1600$. The empirical radius parameters from reaction cross sections differ significantly from those from elastic scattering quarter points for ${Z}_{1}{Z}_{2}<1000$, but seem to approach one another for ${Z}_{1}{Z}_{2}>1000$. This behavior is shown to be consistent with predominantly refractive scattering for low ${Z}_{1}{Z}_{2}$ and dominance for surface absorption for ${Z}_{1}{Z}_{2}>1000$.NUCLEAR REACTIONS Semiclassical analysis of elastic scattering and reaction cross sections of heavy ions; predominantly refraction for ${Z}_{1}{Z}_{2}<500$ and strong absorption for ${Z}_{1}{Z}_{2}>1000$.
