Abstract

Longitudinal and transverse elastic constants of the filled skutterudite HoFe 4 P 12 have been measured as a function of temperature in magnetic field up to 12 T. Both the constants show anomalies at the ferromagnetic transition temperature of 5 K. The longitudinal constant shows a remarkable elastic softening below 10 K in zero magnetic field. The transverse constant shows a shallow minimum around 7 K in high magnetic fields. Origin of the elastic anomalies were discussed based on the crystalline electric field scheme of this compound.
