Abstract
The theory of Makishima and Mackenzie have been used to calculate theoretically the elastic moduli and Poisson's ratio for the 65SiO 2-15PbO-5CaO—(15 − x)K 2O − xNa 2O glass system ( x = 0, 3, 6, 7.5, 9, 12 mol%) from the chemical composition and the experimentally determined density to predict and correlate the experimental data. The observed values of Young's modulus do not agree well with those calculated from this model but they do agree well with that calculated from the modified model presented by Rocherulle et al. The theoretically calculated values of shear modulus show excellent correlation with the observed results. Moreover, most of the experimental values of bulk modulus and Poisson's ratio agree well with the calculations based on the theory of Makishima and Mackenzie.
