Abstract
Elastic Light Scattering (ELS) for studying flow induced changes in the shape and dimensions of flexible linear polymers is considered. A general expression for the scattering structure factor P (s,t) from Rouse chains under arbitrary flows is obtained. In the limit of Small Angle Scattering (SAS), P(s,t) is expanded in a sum of two contributions: Debye’s equilibrium expression for gaussian chains plus a flow dependent term. The Steady State Shear Flow (SSSF) and the Small Amplitude Oscillatory Shear Flow (SAOSF) cases are considered. Closed mathematical expressions for the relative stretching and orientation of the chain are obtained and flow‐induced scattering dissymmetry is discussed for the SSSF case. For the SAS under SAOSF a complex scattering function P* is introduced in analogy with the complex viscoelastic modulus and flow birefringence.
