Abstract

We investigate elastic interactionsin nematic elastomers and gels using a Ginzburg-Landau model for the isotropic-nematic transition. We propose an elastic origin of the "four-leaf clover” pattern observed in depolarised light scattering from polydomain nematic elastomers. We also investigate the director fluctuation in the nematic phase.Aligned nematic states are found to be unstable below a critical elongation.
