Abstract

The technique of Brillouin spectroscopy has been used to determine the full set of adiabatic elastic constants of the orientationally disordered rhombohedral Ib phase of CCl4. The values of the elastic constants at 247.7 K are C11=45.4, C12=29.2, C13=27.3, C14=−1.2, C33=43.3 and C44=9.5 (in units of kbar). This system is elastically quite isotropic and can be closely approximated by hexagonal symmetry. The bulk modulus (33.5 kbar) is almost identical to that of the metastable orientationally disordered cubic Ia phase of CCl4.
