Abstract

The adiabatic elastic constants of single-crystal cadmium fluoride have been measured over the temperature range of 4.2-295 K. The values of the elastic constants given in units of ${10}^{10}$ N/${\mathrm{m}}^{2}$ at 4.2 and 295 K, respectively, are ${C}_{11}=19.79 \mathrm{and} 18.39$, ${C}_{44}=2.490 \mathrm{and} 2.196$, and ${C}_{12}=7.294 \mathrm{and} 6.619$. The Debye temperature calculated from the elastic constants at 4.2 K is 331.6 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 0.7 K. A phenomenological relationship between the Debye temperature and the reduced mass of the unit cell of the cubic-metal fluorides is reported.
