Abstract
We have performed ultrasonic measurements on the filled skutterudite compound Pr x La 1− x Fe 4P 12 for x=0.85. A remarkable elastic softening towards low temperature has been observed in the elastic constants, C 11 and ( C 11− C 12)/2, whereas no softening has been observed in C 44. Furthermore, a clear shoulder structure was observed in C 11 and ( C 11− C 12)/2 at around 4 K . It is probably attributed to the first excited state split by crystalline electric field effect. The elastic properties and low-lying 4f-level scheme of Pr ions in Pr x La 1− x Fe 4P 12 will be discussed.
