Abstract

The elastic and piezoelectric constants of trigonal crystals of selenium and tellurium have been determined. Their values were deduced from measurements of ultrasonic phase velocities at room temperature. The stiffnesses cEαβ in units of 1010 N/m2 and the piezoelectric constants eiα in C/m2 for selenium are found to be cE11=1.98±0.02, cE12=0.66±0.04, cE13=2.02±0.06, ‖cE14‖=0.69±0.03, cE33=8.36±0.03, cE44=1.83±0.01, cE66=0.66±0.01, e11=0.32±0.02, ‖e14‖=0.10±0.1; for tellurium cE11=3.257±0.01, cE12=0.845±0.015, cE13=2.57±0.05, ‖cE14‖=1.238±0.014, cE33=7.17±0.01, cE44=3.094±0.01, cE66=1.206±0.005.
