Abstract

The measured structure factor of an amorphous material contains both elastic and inelastic contributions. We study here the localisation in reciprocal space and the relative weights of the elastic and inelastic contributions and deduce how the structure factor must evolve with temperature. We classify the n-phonon, mass expansion, Debye and Einstein approximations and deduce critical tests for their validity. A method to obtain the structure factor due only to the equilibrium positions of atoms is proposed.
