Abstract
Summary. E. sericoloides A. C. Sm. var. diffusus Coode is described and comparisons made with the inadequately known typical variety, as well as with E. arnhemicus F. Muell., E. royenii Weibel and E. multisectus Schltr. The following discussion and description are needed for the forthcoming account of Elaeocarpaceae in Flora Malesiana. This paper was stimulated by collections made under the auspices of a project set up jointly between PT Freeport Indonesia, Rio Tinto (London), LIPI Indonesia through the Herbarium Bogoriense, the Herbarium of Cenderawasih University (now Universitas Negeri Papua or 'UNIPA'), Manokwari and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) Contract of Work (COW) Mining and Project Area lies on the southern flank of the Sudirman Mountains, and covers approximately 3000 km2 extending from the mines at about 4600 m a.s.l. to the coast. The nearest centre of population independent of the mining operation is Timika. As in Coode 2001b, I have recorded the descriptions in DELTA and marked sheets used for the purpose with *.
