Abstract

This paper deals with the preparation and characterization of nickel films produced on 316L stainless steel (SS). A major concern is improving the properties of SS in order to maintain integrity of components (engineering structures) during their entire life service when subjected to aggressive environments. The removed films, in form of foils, can be used as a barrier between uranium and aluminum cladding during manufacturing of Low Enriched Uranium-LEU-target.The morphology of the nickel films was investigated by SEM technique. The electrochemical behavior and the corrosion properties of the deposits were carried out using open circuit potential (OCP) and potentiodynamic polarization. The uniform and compact deposits showed fine grains and particularly excellent protection against corrosion in 3% NaCl solution. The results show the polarization resistances Rp are about 125KΩ for the coated samples; however, they are about 24 KΩ for the uncoated one and conversely, the corrosion current was reduced by 5 times. A significant improvement in corrosion resistance was obtained. It is in this context that this study enrolled for developing new methods of protection, predictive and corrective, of materials by the use of nickel-based films and foils. The Zr, Nb, Cr, Cu...alloys coatings will be studied.
