El Trabajo Social y la identidad gay: Una experiencia de intervención con grupos en condición de vulnerabilidad al VIH/ITS desde las acciones de Programa Compañeros, A.C.

Abstract

The following is a text that briefly introduces the author's experience as a social worker from Programa Compañeros, A.C., a civil society organization in Juarez City, Mexico, which since 1986 has been working on HIV prevention through peer counselors. In this paper, the author tells us how his work was based on professional knowledge (training in Social Work) hand in hand with knowledge derived from the assumption of sexual identity and how these two elements helped to perform good interventions with men of gay identity, therefore, we talk about the different actions taken to prevent HIV transmission in this population by using the Face-to-Face methodologies and the Personalized Cognitive Counseling methodologies applied from the guidance and peer learning. Other aspects such as the Human Rights framework applied in Social Work and some reflections are also addressed.
