Abstract

In this paper we analyze the existence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) in the different Mexican regions. By incorporating the manufacturing companies according to their size and the different levels of environmental pollution, we provide evidence of the compliance with the curve for certain regions of the country. For this, we use official data available for the period 1999-2009 to formulate and evaluate a spatial panel econometric model, which shows that the EKC is not met in the regions where micro and small enterprises are predominant. Although there are several studies regarding the EKC, the role of the productive structure of local companies on the environment has not been analyzed deeply .
