Abstract
This article shows a new interpretation of the function of the famous Court of Lions in the Alhambra of Granada, built in the 1360's by Muḥammad V. The study of the contemporary architecture in the Maghreb (Fez, Sale, Tlemcen, etc.), the close relations between Muḥammad V of Granada and the neighbouring Islamic countries, his own knowledge of the architecture produced under the Marinid dynasty during his Moroccan exile in Fez from 1359 to 1362, etc., makes us reconsider the Palace of the Lions as a royal madrasa-zāwiya , where its founder could even have been buried in 1391. Moreover, this hypothesis would clearly explain the numerous anomalies the Palace of Lions presents.

Dos Hermanas, tesis rebatida por Ángel López López y Antonio Orihuela Uzal («Una nueva interpretación del texto de Ibn al-Jatíb sobre la Alhambra en 1362», Cuadernos de la Alhambra, 26 [1990], 121-144), al ubicar dicho mexuar en la zona que aún hoy se conoce con tal nombre. La primera parte del recorrido es muy clara, y se puede estudiar cómo se va haciendo más «áulico» el camino desde la Puerta de las Armas hasta que llegamos al Palacio de Gomares tras atravesar la zona administrativa y el mexuar. Sin duda la pieza angular de todo el «engranaje» es el Palacio de los Leones, cuyo giro en su disposición se debe, según nuestra hipótesis, a la voluntad de aproximarlo a la zona funerario-religiosa del recinto palatino. Consideramos el Palacio de los Leones como un lugar de transición funcional, entre lo áulico-civil y lo funerario-rehgioso
