Abstract

The aim of the article is to analyze the forms and scope of the use of the military instrument in the international policy of South American countries. Based on quantitative and qualitative data analysis and the comparative method, the author verifies three research hypotheses, according to which, firstly, in the last two decades, the importance of the military instrument in the international policy of the countries of the region has increased, but its effectiveness remains at a low level, secondly – it plays a significant role in the policy of building alliances, and thirdly – it is used only indirectly and selectively, mainly for defensive purposes. The article focuses on analyzing selected forms of the use of the military instrument in international politics, such as deterrence with military potential, the development of military potential and transfer of weapons, and the demonstration of strength and participation in UN peacekeeping missions.
