Abstract

ABSTRACTThis article examines the Russian translations of Lope de Vega's tragedy El castigo sin venganza (Punishment without Vengeance), with a special focus on the 1962 translation by Yuri Kornéyev, which today remains the official and only available translation to the general Russian reader. The main objective of the study is to analyze how the meaning of the work changes in the translated version, due to a series of lexical decisions made by the translator. Specifically, I explore how Kornéyev's decision to keep the nineteenth-century Russian translation of the title as Nakazanie—ne mschenie (Punishment Is Not Vengeance) affects his own interpretation of the tragedy and therefore his work with Lope's text.
