Abstract
El descubrimiento de los números irracionales introduce una ruptura en la visión de mundo del hombre de la Grecia antigua. En este trabajo se analiza brevemente la época posterior a ese descubrimiento, tal como incidentalmente aparece en el Menón, en especial donde Sócrates interroga a un joven esclavo. De manera más extensa se describe la época anterior, pero no directamente, sino por medio de la descripción de un instrumento de múltiples funciones: el gnomón.
