Abstract
Puerto Rico comenzó a fortificarse a mediados del siglo XVI, cuyas obras se prolongaron hasta finales del XIX. Las primeras defensas siguieron el modelo abaluartado, pero la aparición de los cañones de ánima rayada obligó a modificar las fortificaciones construidas hasta el momento, dando como resultado un nuevo modelo defensivo basado en las teorías de Montalembert, caracterizado por la eliminación del factor geométrico, utilización de formas sencillas, reducidas dimensiones, erigidas en emplazamientos elevados.
