Abstract

The height of sport in the Basque society in the thirties aroused the interest of the Basque Government during the Civil War. This was the origin of football team «Euzkadi», created in April 1937. Until its demise in 1939, conducted tours throughout Europe and America, making propaganda in favour of the Basque Government and raising funds to cover Basque exile. So, football was an instrument of propaganda and Basque Nation-building. However, its history had many contradictions, which contrasted with the idealism that often has been the subject. In this article we clarify its real history and its impact on the relationship between sport and Basque national identity during the war.
