Abstract
The article focuses on the role of Austrian noble Adam von Dietrichstein on the court of Maximilian II, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire (1564-1576). Dietrichstein stayed for all his life in the service of the house of Habsburg. As a prototype of a career-oriented aristocrat of Early Modern age, he served to the governing dynasty in diplomatic and court offices. Since the beginning of his career, he showed his inclination to the Spanish branch of the Habsburg family. It culminated during his diplomatic mission in Madrid (1563-1573), when he created close bonds to the Spanish monarchy. After his return to Central Europe, Dietrichstein belonged to the highest ranks of the hierarchy of the imperial court. As a client of Spanish king Philip II, he was pretending to influence the emperor in intentions of the politics of his Spanish relatives. This tentatives of Dietrichstein were then reflected in the dynamics of his relation with Maximilian II, which is described in this article.

Adam von Dietrichstein se convertiría entonces en el primer embajador de origen centroeuropeo en España y segundo en total (mencionemos que la misión diplomática regular entre ambas ramas de la familia Habsburgo se estableció después de la abdicación de Carlos V, ya que éste unía en su persona los títulos de emperador del Sacro Imperio Romano y rey de España). Su elección para este cargo fue seguramente resultado también de otros factores, como el matrimonio con Margarita de Cardona, su cercanía a la emperatriz María, esposa de Maximiliano II y hermana de Felipe II, las misiones diplomáticas al servicio de la casa Habsburgo o la estancia en España a finales de los años 40. “A lo menos doi gracias a Dios que, aunque antes que fuessemos a Spaña no huviesse aquella correspondentia que se podrá dessear entre príncipes tan conjuntos, que después de haver llegado nosotros la huvo mayor, y si bien el tiempo que ay estube huvo harto en que tropezar y occasiones de grandes desgustos, que haian passado todas, de manera que se conservasse la buena unión y conformidad entre ellos.” Citado por: EDELMAYER, “Honor y dinero”, p
