Abstract

The political rise of the Alvarez de Toledo family, Dukes of Alba since 1472, transformed the town of Alba de Tormes in the capital city of its domains. The castle which had been, so far, a simple geostrategic military site, became a residential palace, without losing its military dimension. The new residence was adapted to the existing new ceremonial needs and court fashions of the Late Middle Ages. This paper addresses the analysis of the construction phases of the castle-palace during the fifteenth century, when Alba de Tormes was ruled by Bishop Gutierre Alvarez de Toledo (1376-1446); Fernan Alvarez de Toledo, 1st Count of Alba (c. 1398-1464); Garcia Alvarez de Toledo, 1st Duke of Alba I (? -1488) and Fadrique Alvarez de Toledo, 2nd Duke of Alba (1458-1531).
