Abstract
Discourse on the Method by Rene Descartes offers a variety of scientific and anthropological principles that takes shape in the short story “El dia del derrumbe” (“The day of the collapse”) by Juan Rulfo. The verbal clarity and accessibility as well as the notion of doubt that were studied by the French philosopher are implemented in this story. Contrasting aspects of the Cartesian clarity and doubt develop a discursive and thematic relation in the narrative piece. The importance that Descartes confers to social customs and norms are found in the plot and the background of the story that takes place in the sociopolitical context of a Mexican town during the first half of the twentieth century.
