Abstract
This paper analyzes the history of South American fossil mammal collections, especially those stored at the Paris Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle in the mid 19th century. Presenting the work of A. Bravard, the paper focuses on three aspects: the provincial collectors’ practices, the fossil collection’s transactions and the competence among European museums as a ground for acquiring such collections.

Summary
Museo de La Plata Universidad Nacional de La Plata. En este trabajo se analiza la formación de las colecciones de mamíferos fósiles de la región del Río de La Plata tomando, como caso particular, las del Museo de Historia Natural de París de mitades del siglo XIX. Se presta especial atención a la obra de los «amateurs» de provincia, a las transacciones de compra y venta de colecciones de fósiles y a la competencia entre museos como argumento para justificar las mismas.
