Abstract

The author compares desert warfare over the last 50 years; from Operation COMPASS at Sidi Barrani in 1940 and Operation LIGHTFOOT at El Alamein in 1942 to Operation DESERT STORM in the Gulf. Looking at the role of air power and the complexity of weapons systems in an increasingly high tech age, he concludes by advocating a unified command structure.
