Abstract

Today different types of actors, with arguments from an ecomodern discourse, propose clean technologies as solutions for various environmental issues in the future. This ecomodern discourse calls for green consumption, creation of market solutions and economic incentives, all based on the claimed necessity for economic growth. This has not always been the case, but today the ecomodern discourse dominates the political agenda regarding environmental and energy politics. One of its proponents is Arnold Schwarzenegger. In this article the politics and film roles of previous governor of California, actor and former Mr. Universe Schwarzenegger will be analyzed and connected to the rise of the ecomodern politics regarding fuel cells and hydrogen that he recommended. Reading his changes in masculinity, intertwined with the expansion of ecomodern discourse, the article illustrates changes in environmental politics and broadens the understanding of our present form of hegemonic ecomodern masculinity.
