Abstract

The positive attitude of people towards the environment is conditioned by the large number of personal and environmental factors among which environmental education is one of the most important ones. Destructive and undesirable patterns of human behavior for the environment with serious safety implications for people can be prevented by an appropriate education system. The author elaborates on the conceptual foundations and characteristics of environmental education with a special emphasis on the concept of education for sustainable development, which is very important for understanding environmental security. In addition, a comprehensive and systematic approach exposes the conceptual relationships and mutual effects of pro-environmental behavior and environmental education. Finally, the models of pro-environmental behavior are analyzed and described, starting with those based on the linear progression of environmental knowledge towards the development of environmental awareness in humans, to recent models of human behavior that seek to identify behavior determinants that lead to pro-environmental actions.
