Abstract

Destination choice has been effected by different factors such as developing communication technologies, transportation and information resources. Different groups such as family, colleagues, social memberships, reference groups also have an influence on destination choice and information search. Thus, a survey was conducted to determine the extent to which groups might have an influence on destination choice of domestic tourists. Data were collected via a questionnaire based on the convenience sampling representing those visiting Gokceada, through mainly face to face implementation in August 2006. It is determined that domestic tourists have been mainly influenced by their own relatives, families and close friends in addition to colleagues and workplace friends. Factor analysis revealed six groups: political-religious, columnist, business, writer and presenter, family and relatives, and close-friend. It has been determined that the groups of political-religious, travel columnist, and presenters and writers had been influencing the domestic tourists who were collecting information before coming to Gokceada than who were not.
