Abstract

IF a particle of mass m is in a circular orbit of radius r around a central body of mass M ≫ m and if M suddenly undergoes a decrease of mass, carried to infinity by massless particles, say, the orbit of m will be perturbed as the shell of emitted particles passes its radius. The question of the escape of m and of its exact subsequent motion has been discussed1,2 and in this communication we turn our attention to a related question.
