Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the ideas of scholars; working in the field of educational administration, about competencies required of school administrators, problems related to the existing competencies of school administrators and the solution of these problems. Literature was scanned and semi-structured interview form was prepared for the conceptual structure of the research carried out using phenomenology pattern from qualitative research methods. The final version of the form was created with mutatis mutandis according to results of preliminary discussions held with some faculty members in the field of educational administration at Dokuz Eylul University. The study group of the research consists of ten academicians working in the field of educational administration at Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University. Audio recording made in interviews and content analysis was performed on the data obtained from the interviews. Findings are presented with tables and direct quotations. School administrators have competencies like organization structure, management processes, financing, etc. as technical; motivation, to create cooperation, to oversee individual differences, etc. as humanitarian, management theories, education philosophy, leadership theories, etc. as conceptual according to academics in the field of education administration. The basic problems about competences are expressed relating educational philosophy, communication, finance and management processes. Teaching experience at the appropriate level, the updated content of the written exam, post-graduate study and freedom of choice at in-service training are among the recommendations for the solution of these problems.
