Abstract

Models relating to the atomistic behaviour of the surface are developed in correlation with two kinetic theories of the anodic dissolution of iron depending on the structure of the solid phase. A change of mechanism may be incited by varying the activity of surface, eg by recrystallization or by lattice deformation or by adsorption of foreign substances. The latter influence is especially discussed. The models presented relating the anodic decomposition of surface are confirmed (1) in kinetic studies on the anodic dissolution of different species of purest iron in the system Fe/H2SO4, (2) in investigations of the surfaces of anodically attacked probes by electron microscopy.
