Abstract

The formaldehyde release of pine chips before and after impregnation with urea and urea-ammonium sulphate solutions was determined according to the flask-method at 40°C and 103°C after 24 h, 48 h, 72 h and 144 h. Also the pH-values were measured in the aqueous solution. The results reveal: (1) The formaldehyde release of untreated chips was much higher than that of the impregnated ones. (2) The pH-values in the aqueous solution were slightly acidic for unimpregnated chips. The impregnated chips showed a different behaviour: the pH-values measured at 103°C were in the alcaline region. (3) There was no distinct difference between the chips impregnated with urea solution and those impregnated with urea-ammonium sulphate solution.
