Abstract

A hitherto unpublished diploma of Emperor Otto IV, probably from 1210, and a reference to a lost diploma of Otto IV transmitted in an inventory are printed and extensively discussed. They were discovered in the archive of the cathedral chapter of Verona in the course of preparatory work for the editions of the diplomata of Emperors Henry VI and Otto IV by the Vienna branch of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica. Otto IV’s diploma is transmitted in a copy by the notarius sacri palatii Zilius from the first half of the 13th century. It is placed in context of the cathedral chapter’s efforts to establish its judicial rights in Breguzzo, Bondo, Bolbeno and Zuclo in Judicaria in the Trentino, in Belfiore (former Porcile) 20 km east of Verona and in Marzana (now a northeastern district of Verona). The Veronese Commune clearly appears as the foremost power in the region. With backing by the Emperor’s authority, the chapter aimed at securing the Commune’s support.
