Abstract

A measuring device which allows the determination of small quantities of 235U in large measuring samples is described. For 235U-determination livo methods are used: — the measurement of fission neutrons resulting from the fission of 235U by irradiation of the measuring sample with neutrons of a 124Sb/Be photoneutron source and — the measurement of γ-rays resulting from the simultaneous correction of γ ray absorption within the matrix material of the measuring sample using the results of a γ-ray transmission measurement. Depending on the matrix material of the measuring sample the determination of a minimal detectionable amount of 0.1÷5 g of 235U contained within a 200-l-barrel is achievable after a measuring time of ∼ 30 min using the described measuring device.
