Abstract

Abstract The usefulness of eikonal approximation method in determining light scattering is examined. The eikonal formula Q ext and the intensity of the scattered wave at small angles are obtained in simple analytical forms for scattering from a spherical particle. The numerical results are compared with the exact values from a Mie calculation. It is pointed out that the eikonal method works for a rather wide range of Mie sizes and refractive indices, if n 2 − 1 is replaced by 2(n − 1). With this modification it is concluded that the eikonal method is a useful and powerful technique for studying light scattering through smog and cloud for example.
