Abstract

A group of chemists from Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) and the American Chemical Society's Publications Division in Columbus, Ohio, form a giant-size representation of the 18-millionth chemical substance to be added to the CAS Registry database: (lS-cis)- 2~phenyl-3-cyclohexene-l-carboxylk acid. In all, 300 people were needed to draw the molecule, which was 85 feet wide. According to CAS, the compound, identified in a patent application from Merck, is an intermediate in the preparation of tachykinin receptor antagonists—substances that may be useful la the treatment of inflammatory diseases, pain, migraines, and other ailments. ...
