Abstract
The eigenvalue j(j + 1) of the total angular momentum operator squared follows from the commutation relations for angular momentum. An alternative proof is given based on the uncertainty relation for the angular momentum components and . For expectation values in the state , the uncertainty relation holds as an equality and is used in the proof.
