Abstract

In this letter, the concept of eigenmodes is applied to characterize the radiation of lossy compact multielement antenna (MEA) systems. Until now, the eigenmode analysis was performed for lossless MEA systems or for lossy ones without, however, calculating, but assuming instead, the losses within the MEA system. In this work, conversely, the radiation matrix is formed by using the realized effective length matrix, which includes the conductive and dielectric losses within the MEA systems. The total, mismatch, and radiation eigenefficiencies of five compact MEA systems comprising two to six antenna elements are deduced and discussed.
