Abstract

It was hypothesized that (a) ego strength is inversely related to the discrepancy between conscious and unconscious self-concepts, (b) Ss with high ego strength will have greater unconscious concern for achievement than Ss with low ego strength, and (c) Ss with low ego strength will have greater unconscious concern for security than those with high ego strength. Witkin's rod-and-frame test, used to operationally define ego strength, and two forms of a sentence completion test, designed to measure various discrepancies between conscious and unconscious self concepts, were administered to 49 Ss. The second hypothesis was accepted, and the first and third hypotheses were rejected.
