Abstract

Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha, who was resurrected by İskender Pala’s pencil in the novel titled Efsane-The Legend formed the image of Barbaros, who was dealt with as a novel character in parallel with historical reality. Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha’s life, a historical figure, was dealt with as whole in the possibilities of a novel and offered us an opportunity for character analysis. In the novel, Barbaros, who shows the feature of type evolved into a character, the context is appropriate for the reader to create an image of Barbaros without losing his historical and personal tenets through a talented fiction. In this study, within the limits of a paper we conducted a character analysis of Barbaros using Freud’s dynamic and comprehensive psychoanalysis theory which was put forward to account for human in terms of his/her childhood, dream, concerns and misunderstandings. Besides this, referring to Mehmet Kaplan’s book Type Analyses Barbaros Hayreddin’s historical and mythical personality was examined and a typological analysis was performed. Character and type analysis were performed for each case and we tried to find out the link the novel creates between the past, the present and the future. We argued that if characters are purified or crystallized they turn out to be types.
