Abstract

AbstractThis chapter investigates the status of language learning motivation among Chinese university EFL learners. The quantitative data demonstrate that Chinese university EFL learners were highly motivated to study English, and their motivation for studying English was influenced mainly by seven motivational variables. Moreover, the quantitative data also suggest that learners’ gender played a very complicated role in L2 motivation. However, with respect to the effect of major on L2 motivation, the present study reveals that the overall L2 motivation scores did not vary significantly between English majors, arts majors (excluding English majors) and science majors. The qualitative results have showed four themes that in students’ motivation for studying English: cultural interest, ideal L2 self, enjoyment of English learning, and integrative reasons.KeywordsL2 motivationEFL learnersWeb-based surveyInterviewsGenderMajorCultural interestIdeal L2 selfIntegrative reasons
