Abstract

The objective of this research was to measure the efficiency scores in the expenses with environmental management of the nine states that make up the Brazilian Legal Amazon and to measure the effect of the possible causes of this (in)efficiency in the scores obtained. For this purpose, we use the nonparametric mathematical model known as Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and the regression analysis, in sequence, to verify which effects are determinant for efficiency levels with environmental management. The results showed that the state of Roraima appears as the most efficient, while the states of Maranhao and Tocantins have the lowest efficiency scores. The results also showed that territorial extension and environmental embargoes contribute positively to efficiency gains, while population, planted area, and average temperature have an inverse relationship with efficiency levels.
