Abstract

Balmori, A. 2015. Effectiveness of legislation for the conservation of threatened birds in Spain: Advancing in a cross-sectional model for conservation and management of threatened fauna . Ecosistemas 2 4(3): 61-77. Doi.: 10.7818/ECOS.2015.24-3.09 The degree of compliance with the existing legislation by the Autonomous Communities with regard to the implementation of Recovery and Conservation (or management) Plans of threatened bird species in Spain is analyzed and the reasons on the delay in its implementation are discussed. Effectiveness (benefits for conservation of threatened birds) between Recovery / Conservation conventional Plans and Action Plans aimed at correcting specific threats (affecting several species) were also compared. While threats affect in different degree each species, depending on their backgrounds and characteristics, the Action Plans can be considered a good complement to the Conservation and Recovery Plans. For this reason we highlighted the benefits of implementing the complementarity of species-specific plans and other dedicated to implementing action plans or strategies to mitigate cross specific threats that can improve the population status of a wide range of species with the same aims conservation problems, achieving an overall improvement of biodiversity in their area of application.
