Abstract

Congressional efforts to elevate the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to presidential cabinet level ran into some opposition during a September 21 hearing of the House of Representatives' Subcommittee on Energy Policy, Natural Resources, and Regulatory Affairs.While House Science Committee Chair Sherwood Boehlert (R‐N.Y) testified in favor of a “clean” bill that does not get bogged down with potentially controversial amendments, others said that legislation elevating the $7.5‐billion‐a‐year agency should include requirements for the EPA to improve substantively its operations in several areas, such as its use of sound science and economic analyses.
