Peterson said he hopes that the current assessment of quality will move beyond what happens in just the clinical setting, and will include the patient as part of shared accountability measures. “To reach a blood pressure goal or get a cholesterol level down, it takes a partnership between the caregiver and the patient,” Peterson said. “In the past, physicians said, ‘I am not accountable for what the patient does. If I prescribed and you do not take them, that is your fault.’ At some point patients, as well as physicians, will be part of the accountability scheme, and I generally like the concept of me being rewarded for being on a team with my patient.”
