Abstract

Sago industry is an important component of small scale sector in the developing countries of the tropical region, like India. Being small scale industries, they suffer a lot to overcome the menace of treating the high strength effluent, from the sago processing, containing a large amount of organic material which has a potential to cause high level of water pollution in the surrounding environment. With an objective to minimise the effects of water pollution from the sago industries, we took up a study to increase the efficiency of effluent treatment, by using a complex filter comprising activated carbon and zeolite. The study shows that this method can prove to be an improvement over other methods by enhancing the efficiency of the pollutant reduction process in the sago effluent treatment as the result has shown considerable reduction in TDS, BOD5 and COD of the effluent.
