Abstract

Abstract Two unbiased methods for estimating the volume of an individual tree are examined. One method is based on importance sampling and has been discussed by Gregoire et al. (1986). The other method is a logical extension of critical height sampling, which was first discussed by Kitamura (1962). The two methods are compared using a simple model for tree taper. When independent samples are drawn, the critical height method requires an inordinate sample size. However, when a negative correlation is induced in the sample observations using antithetic variates, both methods become much more efficient. The conclusion is that antithetic variates should be considered when taking multiple observations with either of these methods for unbiased tree volume estimation. For. Sci. 33(2):583-590.
