Abstract

Abstract An FAU-type zeolite membrane was applied to the efficient transesterification of methyl acetate with 2-propanol. When the transesterification reaction was carried out using DOWEX 50W as a catalyst, the conversion of methyl acetate reached 38% at equilibrium. Removal of the by-produced methanol selectively from the equilibration solution using the FAU-type zeolite membrane increased the conversion of methyl acetate to 57% by shifting the chemical equilibrium. This suggests that methanol-selective membranes have the potential to promote efficient transesterification reactions.
