Abstract

This paper presents a novel approach of coordinating the droop controls between grid-connected variable speed wind turbine (VSWT) and associated energy storage system (ESS) for supporting the primary frequency control in power systems. Available power reserve from the deloaded VSWT, which is a function of average wind speed and turbine rotational speed, is estimated in an efficient manner. Based on the available power reserve from the VSWT and auxiliary role of the ESS, coordinated droop control between the VSWT and ESS participating in the primary frequency control is redesigned, and the corresponding algorithm is given. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated through a comparison of the control results with that obtained from the case of only the VSWT participating in the frequency control.
