Abstract

This paper presents a new method for efficient calculation of wave-induced linear and nonlinear load effects in flexible ships. It is a combination of a modal superposition and the conventional load evaluation approach based on a rigid body model, and implies reduced computation effort in time-domain motion and load simulations. It is applied to a 270 m long containership (SL-7 class) as an example to demonstrate its efficiency. The method can also be used for other long flexible marine structures.
